Lovestruck high school student Chris Burwell chose his sweetheart to be his prom date – a Super Mario Bros. computer game!
Rather than find a pretty human date, he wanted to take his treasured possession instead, and the Super Smash Bros. Melee Nintendo game got an invite.
Burwell, of Garden Grove, California, posted photos of himself at the prom with his game, which quickly spread across social media.
He said: “I saw a couple of weeks ago that a guy took his waifu to prom, and I thought, ‘That’s very funny, but I’m not that bad. What else could I do?’
“And I thought I’ll take Melee, because there’s such a big fan base and I’m one of those fans. It felt right. It was the heat of the moment.”
Burwell claimed it was not until the actual day of the prom that he decided to take the game – because he found himself without a real date.
“I’m not, like, a total loser, but I don’t know any girls that I would take,” he maintained.
“I had the time of my life. This was my first high school dance — I never did anything like that before. I think that’s very memorable and I don’t regret it at all.”
