This is what fossilized dinosaur skin looks like

A fossil like this one is at least 65 million years old. The organic matter decayed long ago leaving behind a cavity in the rock which filled with other minerals which, when mixed with some of the minerals left behind by the skin, formed a new rock in exactly the shape of the organic matter which made the impression. Neato.
