A Saudi man living in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia was arrested for flying the rainbow flag above his home, not knowing it represented LGBT pride.
The man, a doctor working in Jeddah was arrested after erecting the flag on a 3 metre pole above his house according to local reports. When questioned by Saudi religious police (Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice), the man claimed he had no idea what the flag stood for and he had simply purchased it online because “one of his children found the colours pretty”.
The flag was promptly removed and after an investigation, the man was bailed. Homosexuality in Saudi Arabia is punishable by death and despite several hashtags going viral in recent years calling for respect of LGBT rights, many responses were violent and intolerant.
